Answer: The Bluest Eye is undoubtedly a masterpiece of English Literature. The theme of Loneliness is depicted here perfectly. The theme loneliness is very significant in this novel. Almost all characters in the book are lonely in one way or the other. The main characters of the book are George and Lennie. Even though these two seem to have each other, they are both lonesome in a way. Lennie is dumb and unaware of everything around him and it isolates him from many people. George is the only person he can spend time with and he depends on George. George feels responsible for Lennie, but knows he would be better off without him. George has to look after Lennie and clean up the messes he makes, because of this they are never able to stay in one place for a long period of time, making George unable to making lasting relationships with anyone besides Lennie. Crooks and Curley’s wife are specifically lonely in the novel. Crooks is usually known as to everyone else as the stable buck and a nigger.
“I ain’t been wanted in the bunkhouse….They play cards there; I can’t play cards because im black.”
Crooks is forced to live alone in a shed of the barn and so he has no interaction with anybody. Curly’s wife is lonely because she doesn’t really get to talk to anybody except Curly. “I never get to talk to nobody. I get awfully lonely.” She would rather be starring in the movies. She is the only woman on the ranch.
Although Crooks and Curly’s wife are lonely in two different ways, they are still similar cuz they are both discriminated against. Curley’s wife is discriminated against her gender and Crooks is discriminated against because of the Colour of his skin. Those are the main contrasts in the loneliness between Curly’s wife and Crooks. Crooks liked to keep to himself most of the time but Curley’s wife is dying to socialize with any man on the ranch that she could. Most of the other characters have different types of loneliness such as Candy who’s only companion was his old dog and when his dog was killed he had nothing because all his life he just looked after his dog and so when it was killed, he decided to share George and Lennie’s dream and help make it happen.

All the characters find comfort in different ways. Lennie finds solace by touching soft thing like the pups in the barn. He also gets comfort when George recites their dream of living in a big house with a garden and with rabbits and ‘live on the fatta lan’. Curley’s wife likes to try and talk to the men to get comfort.
There are many other things in the novel which give you a sense of loneliness for example the first few words of the book, “a few miles south of Soledad”. Soledad translated from Spanish means loneliness and it is a subtle idea that the book will be mainly themed around loneliness.
